Multiculturalism-A struggle for meaning

Banerji’s sees it as this whole ideology of exotic cultures fusing into a more dominant place where whiteness exists. The pictures of samosis and steel pans may come to mind, perhaps the pictures of different women wearing their cultural gowns/dresses may come to come. Have the Canadian government really embraced this whole notion of multiculturalism? Or do we just like the idea of it? When I go on the Canadian websites, I see this word “tolerant”. Is that the word we really use to fully accept individualities or this tolerant phenomenon comes in when it’s convenient?  But what exactly do we mean by a multi-cultural society?

Because it could somewhat mean a form of pluralism where difference must be present in the society. Banerji do see multiculturalism as a form of ethical fraud to critique the way the “whites” remain powerful keeping multi-cultural people in the ghettos with little social mobility. If we know the experience, dreams, expectations and wishes of people of different cultures living in Canada and even in the United Kingdom, we would understand better the resilience of racialization and racism. There are just somethings you can only solely understand through experience. People from other cultures come to Canada for various reasons, better living conditions, to take care of their kids back home or just to enjoy the simplicity of the freedom of movement however it just seems as if these cultural groups are always in a struggle with White and Whiteness. There’s always a competition because somehow the Whiteness has been evolved around the world as a form of ethnic pureness. As far as anybody should be concerned, history should have little meaning in what happens today especially in regards to racism. Working and surviving together, aiming to make tomorrow better should all be our goals instead of making equality of races such a struggle. The constant reminder to be conscious of our identities in a society can be somewhat overwhelming and prevent one from achieving to their highest goal. Multi-cultural people worry daily about being treated unfairly and always looking for ways to prove themselves out. Blacks and Blackness have the quest for full freedom, putting a system to make multicultural people (which comprise of blacks) should absolutely be removed; no consciousness needed…just a society with people living in pure freedom.
