True Size of Africa

It was definitely a new learning experience about the analysis of the world map in class. I have never taken an in depth look at if the sizes of these countries are really what the designers of these map seems to be? But I was wondering why would they “lie”?  After being in class I did realize that Africa is massive compared to the image perceived on maps or globes. Africa is bigger than China, USA, India, Bangladesh, Greece, Mexico, Peru, France, Spain, New Guinea, Sweden, Japan, Germany, Norway, Italy, New Zealand, United Kingdom and Nepal out together!

Race - Quite Complex

Winant and Miles are very interesting with the way they break down race. Very similar in thoughts with a few differences. Their notion of “race” is very similar to my perspective of race. Race being an ideology, something that exists because we make it come alive in our everyday practices today. Who gives us the right to shove people in to different racial categories without also considering their feelings? We as human beings go under what’s “real” and “false” whether it can be proven or not. Why are we still debating race and the ethics of racism is we can’t even prove scientifically the traits of different races. It just draws to the conclusions that we could be absurd human beings with using science only when it comes efficient and convenient for us.

Reflection on Canadians "Peacekeeping" in Somalia

When first coming to university and researching about Canada, the first thing had all on their websites is about “Peacekeeping”. All these websites and I got an instant awareness of Canadian troops to help in most peacekeeping events and has participated in more of these missions than anywhere else in the world. Winning awards and earning respect from the rest of the world for all their contribution in keeping the peace. I was wondering how come not one negative thing was said in any of these websites?

Frantz Fanon Reflection. Love him!

My reflection today is on the most interesting article in my opinion on the Fact of Blackness from the Book “Black Skin, White Masks” by Frantz Fanon. In class we covered a section and a few terms he used. He uses lots of medical theories to describe his thoughts and experiences about racism, the racialized and the realm of whiteness. Frantz always wanted an explanation of why there was such an inequality of society through skin color and he said when he couldn’t get one as he demanded an explanation “nothing happened, I burst apart”.
